Webjet Steadily Climbs with Record Travel Booking Numbers

Webjet

New financial results released by Webjet (ASX: WEB), a global digital travel business, underscore the significant recovery experienced by the industry following the disruptions caused by COVID-19 lockdowns. The company announced that it had achieved record levels of Webjet bookings and Total Transaction Value (TTV). Furthermore, Webjet’s FY23 Group Bookings and TTV surpassed pre-pandemic levels, aligning with industry analysts’ predictions of a major rebound for the travel sector. Notably, the company’s FY2023 underlying EBITDA of $134.8 million demonstrated a remarkable reversal from its FY22 underlying loss of $15 million.

Webjet Emerges Stronger Post-Pandemic

Webjet’s Managing Director, John Guscic, expressed confidence in the company’s growth prospects, stating that Webjet has emerged from the pandemic in a better position than ever before. While acknowledging that travel has not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels, Guscic emphasized the positive trends witnessed in the second half of FY23. Group Bookings, TTV, Revenue, and EBITDA all surpassed their pre-pandemic figures. These results reflect the company’s strategic efforts to not only recapture demand as travel resumes but also accelerate its growth trajectory. Guscic attributed the improved performance to the contributions of Webjet’s WebBeds business, which has become more profitable than ever. The company aims to capitalize on growing customer interest by implementing proposed upgrades and strengthening partnerships with supply partners to achieve a $10 billion TTV while maintaining industry-leading EBITDA margins.

Webjet Expanding its Online Travel Agency (OTA) Business

Webjet is focused on further expanding its Webjet online travel agency (OTA) business within the international flights market. With fewer competitors, the OTA segment has benefited, and Webjet is optimistic about its future growth prospects. Notably, the company sees its Trip Ninja product as a crucial component driving future expansion. Webjet anticipates that FY24 will also be a strong year, with WebBeds Bookings and TTV already surpassing last year’s figures by more than 35% and 40% respectively.

Despite the pandemic’s impact on the travel and tourism industry, the crisis has also compelled consumers to increasingly rely on online services, accelerating the adoption of online travel booking.

Increasing Confidence among Travelers

A recent survey conducted by Booking.com revealed that travelers are growing more confident about the easing of travel restrictions. Approximately 72% of respondents expressed that travel will always be worthwhile, demonstrating a high level of optimism despite minor limitations. In Southeast Asia, 50% of travelers from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines indicated their intention to travel in 2023.
